Learn more about Montessori
Montessori Education was started by Dr. Maria Montessori. She was born in Italy in 1870 and graduated from the University of Rome La Sapienza Medical School and was the first female doctor in Italy. As a member of the University's Psychiatric Clinic, she became interested in educating children with special needs and learning disabilities. She took what she learned from her time working in Medicine and incorporated it into a new style of education. In 1907 she opened Casa de Bambini or “The children’s house” for poor children in Italy who kept getting in the way of local construction workers!
Dr. Montessori had a different approach towards education and believed that children had a desire to learn and the ability to learn when given the right tools and environment. Her teaching method focused on supporting a child’s desire to learn and helping to facilitate and encourage that passion for learning themselves.
Since then, child development research has confirmed much of what Montessori recommended for young children! Not only is Montessori good for children’s intelligence, it is good for their social and emotional development.
… and using Modern Montessori in your real life
Many parents hope to incorporate the Montessori philosophy into their parenting and home environment. Through creating a prepared environment at home that takes into account the challenges of everyday life, we can help our young people become independent, curious, compassionate, and empowered individuals. We can support children from birth with the Montessori philosophy.
BUT social media and books can make Montessori seem unattainable for the hustle and bustle of everyday life. We get it. We don’t incorporate Montessori perfectly, and you don’t have to either! Simple changes and baby steps will help you and your child get closer to Montessori philosophy and each other.
